AIS and the Bergman Center arranged a competition this year to design a conversion of the old Fårö island school, which the local municipality plans to donate this summer, into a new Bergman Center.

In 2009 The Bergman Center held discussions with Hans Göransson at zuez arkitekter on the development of the project, the outcome of which was a design competition between four invited firms: AIX Arkitekter, Marge Arkitekter, Tham & Videgård Arkitekter and Visby Arkitektgrupp.

The competition opened in February, and the results were announced at a ceremony at the Swedish Film Institute’s film centre on 20 May. Bolle Tham and Martin Videgård were presented as winners with their “Kamera” (Camera) proposal. The judges’ citation and recommendation read as follows:

The challenge of the submitting firms was to “create a robust, sustainable structure for the BC to develop over time and as its operations expand” (quote from submitters’ own description).

It is the judges’ opinion that they have succeeded in this aim and created an innovative and poetic idea that a unanimous panel wishes to declare the winning proposal – a strong, exciting realisation of a BC vision with a clear association to Bergmanesque film worlds and embedded with a poetic simplicity that suits the landscape.

The proposal is thus recommended as a basis for the future construction of the building that is to house the Bergman Centre.

The panel of judges comprised Jannike Åhlund from the Bergman Center, Ann Lindegren Westerman from AIS, Gotland’s municipal architect Carin Johansson, Stefan Johansson from Swedish Travelling Exhibitions and Hans Göransson (chair), here representing AIS.
