Fruängen church

1st prize in open competition.
An open architecture competition was announced in 2003 for the design of a new church, an extension to an existing chapel in the Stockholm suburb of Fruängen. The competition drew over 200 entries and was won by architect Lars Bjursten with his “sub tecto sub divo”. The winning proposal was realised, which is in itself unusual, and the church was officially opened on 1 Advent 2005.
The church extension was designed with a fresh, unconventional approach that creates a sense of harmony with the naturally sensitive environment in which it sits. The interior decoration was fashioned in collaboration with artist Laris Strunke.
